How to practise Table Topics on your own

1

Draw a topic

Pick a category or take whatever comes. Read it once, take a breath, start talking. No notes.

2

Watch the light

Green at the minimum, yellow when it is time to land, red at the limit. The classic window for an impromptu answer is one to two minutes.

3

Get feedback

Practising alone is good. Knowing what to fix is better: record the same topic in PocketPodium and see what you cannot hear yourself.

The timing light, explained

Impromptu answers are usually timed at one to two minutes. Green shows at the minimum (1:00), yellow halfway (1:30), red at the maximum (2:00). An answer that stops before green, or runs on more than 30 seconds after red, is outside the window. The shorter and longer presets are there for first steps and for a stretch.

Five tips for impromptu speaking

  1. Answer the question in your first sentence, then explain why.
  2. Use a simple frame: point, reason, example, point again.
  3. One story beats three arguments. Pick a moment you remember.
  4. Pause instead of saying um. Silence sounds more confident than you think.
  5. When the light turns yellow, decide on your last sentence and land on it.

Why a topic generator alone is not enough

Random topic generators get you talking. They do not tell you that you said um fourteen times, that your pace doubled when you got nervous, or that your ending trailed off. PocketPodium measures exactly that from your recording and adds a coach with a grade, so every round shows what got better and what did not.

Questions

What are Table Topics?

Short impromptu speeches on a topic you only hear when it is your turn, usually one to two minutes long. They train you to think on your feet, which helps in meetings, interviews and every unplanned moment in front of people.

Is this free?

Yes. The generator and the timer are free and need no account. Recording with analysis and coach feedback happens in the PocketPodium app, which you can try for free with just an email address.

How long should an impromptu answer be?

One to two minutes is the classic window. Thirty to sixty seconds is a good start; for a stretch, try two to three minutes.

Which languages are there?

Topics come in English, German, Spanish, French and Italian. The app analyses your answer in the same five languages.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Put the phone where you can see it, tap start and talk. Where the browser allows it, the screen stays on while the timer runs.

How can I practise impromptu speaking every day?

Draw one topic a day, answer it out loud and note your time. Once a week, record an answer in PocketPodium and compare: fewer fillers, a steadier pace, a clearer ending.
